first_imgBUFFALO, NY — The NFL has its first full-time female coach.Kathryn Smith was promoted by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday night to take over as special teams quality control coach on Rex Ryan’s staff. She will assist special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and his assistant Eric Smith, filling the role that opened after Michael Hamlin was not retained following the season.Smith’s appointment comes after Jen Welter served a six-week training camp internship last summer coaching inside linebackers for the Arizona Cardinals.Smith is well-known within the Bills staff after spending this season as an administrative assistant for the team’s assistant coaches. She spent the past seven years working alongside Ryan. She was the New York Jets player personnel assistant when Ryan took over as coach in 2009. Smith then served as Ryan’s assistant in 2014, his final year in New York before he was fired and then hired by the Bills.“She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities,” Ryan said in a statement released by the team. “She has proven that she’s ready for the next step, so I’m excited and proud for her with this opportunity.”Bills offensive lineman Richie Incognito expressed his support for Smith in a tweet.“Congrats Kathryn!! I know you will do a great job,” Incognito said in a post that included a thumb’s up and smiley face. This is not the first time the Bills broke the gender barrier. Linda Bogdan, in 1986, became the NFL’s first female scout, when she joined the team’s player personnel department. Bogdan, who died in 2009, was the daughter of late Bills Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson.Several NFL teams have employed women in prominent roles in the front office. Amy Trask was the Raiders’ chief executive officer for owner Al Davis from 1997 until she resigned in 2013.The Jets promoted long-time executive Jacqueline Davidson to director of football administration last season. She was previously the team’s manager of football administration.Dawn Aponte is Miami’s executive vice president of football administration, and has been involved in the front offices of the Dolphins, Jets, Browns and the NFL for 25 years.Among others on a quickly growing list of high-ranking women in NFL franchises include Katie Blackburn, Cincinnati’s executive vice president; Jeanne Bonk, San Diego’s executive vice president and chief financial officer; and Hannah Gordon, San Francisco’s vice president of legal and government affairs. But Smith’s promotion is the latest step for women getting a chance to join the coaching ranks of North America’s major professional sports. In August 2014, former WNBA player Becky Hammon was hired by the San Antonio Spurs to join coach Gregg Popovich’s staff, making her the NBA’s first full-time paid female assistant coach.Last month, the Seattle Mariners hired Amanda Hopkins as an area scout. In announcing the hiring, the team said Hopkins is believed to be the first female hired as a full-time scout by a major league team since the 1950s.In promoting Smith, Ryan said he consulted with Cardinals coach Bruce Arians.“You can see the success some of these young ladies are having in the coaching profession, such as the young lady that is an assistant to coach Popovich at the San Antonio Spurs, and realize how exciting this is for women like Kathryn Smith as well as the Bills organization,” Ryan said.Smith has 13 seasons of NFL experience, and began her career in 2003 as a Jets game-day/special events intern. Two years later, the Jets promoted her to become a college scouting intern, and eventually became the team’s player personnel assistant in 2007.___AP Sports Writer Dennis Waszak Jr. contributed to this report.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

first_imgStefanos Tsitsipas is through to the fourth round at Melbourne Park with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.Tsitsipas broke the Georgian player’s serve to take a 4-3 lead, then had a match point on Basilashvili’s serve at 5-3. He served out the match in the next game, winning when Basilashvili hit a forehand into the net.Tsitsipas is the first Greek man to reach the round of 16 at two tennis majors. Next he will face defending champion Roger Federer. The six-time champion conceded only three points on his first serve in a 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win over 21-year-old American Taylor Fritz, who was bidding to reach the fourth round at a major for the first time..Tsitsipas received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct from chair umpire Alexandra Robein when he became angry after having his service broken while serving for the third set at 5-4. While serving for the first set, he had to stop because of a screaming infant in the Margaret Court Arena crowd.Rain and wet courts continued to delay the start of play on all the outside courts. Play went ahead on the three main show courts with the stadium roofs closed.Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas smiles as he leaves the court after defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili during their third round match at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia, Friday, Jan. 18, 2019. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)_____12:20 p.m.Greek stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari featured on two of the three main show courts at Melbourne Park as rain delayed the start of play on outside courts. It’s the first time a Greek man and woman have advanced to the third round at the same Grand Slam tournament since 1936.At Rod Laver Arena, Sakkari lost the first set to Ashleigh Barty 7-5 and the Australian received treatment for an apparent stomach muscle issue at the end of the first set. A group of young men in blue t-shirts were vocal supporters of Sakkari, chanting Greek songs that echoed around the closed-roof arena.Over at adjoining Margaret Court Arena, Tsitsipas took the opening set 6-3 against Nikoloz Basilashvili but the Georgian player won the second by the same score.Tsitsipas was having to deal with an inconsistent ball toss, a bird trapped inside the arena that frequently swooped low over the court and a chair umpire that mispronounced his name. One Greek fan frequently began a slow clap just before Tsitsipas’ serves and yelled “go go go.” With the Greek player trailing 3-0 in the second set, moral support appeared to be on the way: Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena Williams’ coach, came down the stairs and headed to his player’s box. Tsitsipas trains at the Mouratoglou Academy in France.TweetPinShare1515 Shareslast_img read more

Riley had been asked what sets Hurts apart from the rest of Oklahoma’s quarterbacks.“He’s gotta win the job first,” Riley said. “If he wins the job, then we’ll talk about that.” It would be hugely surprising if Hurts did not start at Oklahoma when the 2019 regular season begins in a little more than a month. The Sooners have a couple of talented quarterbacks, though none have close to the experience of Hurts.Oklahoma is set to begin its season on Sept. 1 against Houston.Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T. on ABC.last_img read more
