first_imgAMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has added Ball State to its 2020 home football schedule to replace the canceled Cy-Hawk Series game at Iowa. The Cyclones and Cardinals will play Sept. 12. Ball State was available because its game at Michigan was canceled as part of the Big Ten’s decision to play conference games only. Iowa State beat Ball State 38-0 in 1998 in the teams’ only meeting. Northeast went up 2-0 in the first, with the Panthers tying it in the top of the second with a Kaylea Fessler RBI double. Abigayle Angell gave Central Springs a 4-2 lead with a two-run homer in the third, but Northeast tied up the game with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third and a leadoff homer in the fourth. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Donaldson homered and drove in two runs in his Target Field debut with Minnesota, Jorge Polanco hit a two-run shot and the Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 in their home opener. Homer Bailey pitched five innings for the victory in his first start for the Twins. Bailey allowed a two-run homer to Tyler O’Neill in the fifth. Cardinals starter Carlos Martínez was pulled after 3 2/3 innings, when the homer by Donaldson ended his night. Polanco’s drive capped a five-run second for the Twins, who began their 60th season in Minnesota. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — New Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Michael Pierce has opted out of the 2020 season because of concern about the coronavirus. Pierce has asthma. He flew to Minnesota to meet with the team on Tuesday before making his final decision. Pierce signed a three-year contract that included $18 million in guaranteed money. He will receive a $350,000 stipend for the season because he’s considered a non-voluntary absence. His contract terms won’t kick in until 2021.
