first_imgPaul F. Herbert, 92, Millhousen, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at his residence. Born, December 26, 1924 in Greensburg, Indiana, he was the son of Henry G. and Elizabeth M. (Young) Herbert. Paul served in WWII with the US Army 1st Division 2nd Battalion aid station in France, Belgium, and Germany.  He was awarded the following medals: Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the American Theatre Service Medal.  He also received the Diplome Republic of France, Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal, awarded by the President of the French Republic. Paul was a farmer and he loved raising his livestock.  He worked at Stants in Connersville, then Cummins Engine in Columbus for 19 years, and finally 6 years at the Decatur County Highway Department as supervisor.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge, and the American Legion.  He loved western movies, dancing, and gardening. He was married first to Patricia Kanouse on April 12, 1947 and she preceded him in death on June 18, 1966.  He then married Marjorie Wenning on June 10, 1967 and she survives. He is also survived by two sons, Gary (Elaine) Herbert, Columbus, Rick (Barb) Herbert, Greensburg; one daughter, Ann (Jim) Kunz, Greensburg; three brothers, Dennis Herbert, Westport, Lotus Herbert, Greensburg, Robert Herbert, Greensburg; eight grandchildren, Sonja Moscrip, Jerry Herbert, Jeff Herbert, Tricia Kappes, Joe Herbert, Craig Herbert, Becky Tebbe, Matt Kunz; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife; brothers, Harry Herbert, Clarence Herbert; sisters, Dorothy Herbert, Edna Minary. Family and friends will gather at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home for a rosary service.  Visitation will follow from 4 – 8:00 p.m. at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.   The family will also receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg with Rev. John Geis officiating. Interment with full military rites will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg.  Memorials may be made to the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. first_imgState rankings …In the two preeminent high school football polls, no Sumner County team graced the top five this week in the rankings. Conway Springs is listed in the “others” in the Kpreps.com in Class 3A but is not listed in the Wichita Eagle poll.Attica-Argonia, fresh off its Class 1A Div. 1 eight man state runner-up finish, is listed in the “others” in the Wichita Eagle, but is not listed in the K-Preps poll.Caldwell is in the “others” in the K-Preps Class 1A Div. II poll, but fails to be listed in the Wichita Eagle.In case you are interested, in Class 4A Div. 1, Andale is ranked No. 2, behind Bishop Miege in both polls. According to K-Preps: “The Stags added safety Djimon Colbert, an Iowa Hawkeye commit, who transferred from Winnetonka, Mo. to a team that beat every opponent by 32 points of more.”No school in Class 4A Div. 1 is winning any state championship in football or basketball as long as the University of Bishop Miege is there.Cross Country news…There is a cross country change of location for the first meet: On Tuesday, September 6 for Wellington’s grades 7-12:The Valley Center meet has been moved this year to The Valley Point Golf Course at 820 N. Meridian.Middle school races start at 4 p.m. With the high school starting around 5:15 p.m.Wellington JV tennis results…The Wellington junior varsity girls tennis team opened the season Tuesday and finished fourth out of six teams. Medalist #1 doubles team included Brentasia Cramer and Laken Kimball which finished second place overall with a 2-1 record.
