first_imgVukovar is among the seventeen cities in Croatia that use the nextbike public bicycle system, and is thus in the nextbike network of over 150 greenest cities in Europe. This greenest, healthiest and most affordable form of public urban transport is fully in line with EU directives and the vision and plans of the City of Vukovar related to sustainable development. Beautiful Vukovar, as the civilizational starting point of Europe in which culture developed for five thousand years and the city that suffered the greatest war destruction, needs projects facing the future. One of the strategic projects and great potentials is certainly the development of tourism, because Vukovar has something to be proud of and something to show.In Vukovar, the tourist infrastructure is developing from year to year, there are more and more events, entrepreneurs who see their opportunity in tourism, and accordingly the offer and quality of accommodation is growing. Apart from Hotel Lav, the city of Vukovar has a problem with the lack of hotel capacities. But even that problem will be solved soon. Namely, a couple of months ago, the city of Vukovar bought one of the symbols of the city, Hotel Dunav, which after reconstruction will have new accommodation facilities, a congress center and will fill the gap of hotel accommodation and generate new value. In recent years, to the delight of the citizens, Vukovar has received several bicycle paths, the most important of which is certainly the one that is still under construction, ie the bicycle path along the state road D2 on the part of Kudeljarska and Priljevo streets, said Vukovar Mayor, prof. Ivan Penava added that this is exactly the route they took on new public bicycles and which is certainly the most important route because it connects the center of Vukovar and Borovo Naselje. “Our citizens have a culture of cycling, so I am convinced that this initiative will be very well accepted. With the new bicycle path and bicycles in the public transport service, we will improve the connection of all parts of Vukovar and at the same time reduce traffic jams. This project is just one in a series of steps we are taking to raise the quality of life of our fellow citizens, but also to present our city in a new European spirit that will surely meet the approval of both citizens and tourists who see Vukovar as the central destination of the Croatian Danube region.Said Penava.Currently, two nextbike stations have been set up in Vukovar, one in the city center, while the other is in Borovo naselje, which enables excellent connections and communication between the two parts of the city, both for citizens and tourists. And not only that, someone eliminates the need to use a car because by using the nextbike system of public bikes the section of about 6 kilometers (from Borovo to the city center) we cross relatively quickly, while still walking takes a little more time. In addition to not having to worry about parking, we significantly reduce the emission of harmful gases, traffic jams, noise, and at the same time cycling has a positive effect on psychophysical health. But the most important thing is how the citizens of Vukovar and all tourists can combine train, bus and public bicycles and thus travel faster, healthier and cheaper while protecting the environment in which we live – through integrated public transport which is becoming imperative in all cities. Also, as the Nextbike system of public bicycles is present in over 150 European countries, foreign tourists are familiar with the whole system, and can also use it without additional registration because the whole database is connected and nextbike can be used anywhere in Europe. The importance of the project was also recognized by INA Industrija nafte dd as the general sponsor of the project and the Croatian National Tourist Board, which fit perfectly into the entire philosophy of the project. Ina as a socially responsible company and CNTB through the development of the tourist offer. “INA systematically pays attention to long-term sustainable and socially responsible business becoming a common behavior not only in our company but also in our partners. Therefore, we are always happy to respond and support all those projects that contribute to the quality of life of local communities and its inhabitants. We are happy that the citizens of Vukovar have been given the opportunity to use a favorable, environmentally and economically sustainable mode of public transport. This mode of transport significantly helps reduce traffic congestion, increases traffic safety, reduces CO2 emissions and harmful exhaust gases in traffic and, most importantly, contributes to environmental protection and improves the quality of life in the city. said Angelika Brnada, Director of Sustainable Development and Protection of Health, Safety and Environment of INA. The project was gladly supported by the employees of Borovo dd, for whom it is an excellent addition to the existing bus lines, as well as the Alliance Society of Our Children on behalf of all child-friendly cities that encourage safer and cleaner streets for carefree children’s play.Launching a public bicycle system in Vukovar was our great wish a few years ago when we were thinking about how to connect the far east of Croatia with all other major county centers, said Krešimir Dvorski, director of Sustav javnih bicikala doo and stressed that combining different forms of public transportation each of us can quickly, easily and conveniently get from point A to point B without owning a car. “We thank the City of Vukovar and INA as the general sponsor of the system maintenance for recognizing the importance of the project for the local community. Thanks to them, the people of Vukovar can enjoy all the benefits that the public bicycle system brings them”Dvorski concluded.Positive statistics indicate the expansion of the tourism sector in Vukovar. According to eVisitor data, last year there was an increase in arrivals and overnight stays in Vukovar, so there were 47.894 arrivals, which is an increase of 12.92 arrivals, as well as 70.621 overnight stays, which is an increase of 47 percent. These figures are also monitored by the private sector, so that eight new accommodation facilities with a total of 188 beds were opened last year. The public bike system just offers hosts added value and service for their guests without the investment of buying their own bikes.Last but not least, the destination Vukovar – Vučedol – Ilok is the winner of the national selection for the “European destination of excellence” (EDEN) and is thus listed among the top 18 cultural tourism destinations in Europe as an example of good practice that promotes sustainable forms of tourism. And integrated public transport and the public bicycle system as the best startup of the green economy and holder of the prestigious Green Mark certificate of excellence certainly contributes to the whole story of sustainable tourism, green technology and environmental protection. What is nextbike? first_imgCosta Rica’s fairy tale will extend to a quarter-final against Holland on Saturday after goalkeeper Keylor Navas’s penalty shoot-out heroics eliminated Greece here.It was Michael Umaña who scored the winning penalty for Costa Rica, their fifth, after Theofanis Gekas’s strike had been repelled by Navas’s strong hand — the only miss of the shoot-out.“Last night, I dreamt, this, it seems untrue,” Umana said. “I was relaxed because I dreamed it. I dreamed it but I didn’t tell anyone. I felt very confident.“This is for my family. It’s for the colleagues who got injured before coming here. They’re not with us, but they gave us a hand on the pitch.”While Umana was euphoric, there was also relief for the Costa Ricans, who had been forced to play for 54 minutes with 10 men after the 66th-minute dismissal of Oscar Duarte. They were leading at that point through a 52nd-minute Bryan Ruiz goal, but had to endure long periods of pressure before the Greeks secured an equaliser in stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes But though Greece went on to dominate the extra period, Fernando Santos’s team were unable to finish off the exhausted Central Americans and Navas and Umana secured shoot-out victory. With it, they ended any fear that Costa Rica, who became only the third Concacaf nation after the United States (twice) and Cuba, to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals on foreign soil, would freeze on the big stage.Yes, they had beaten Italy and Uruguay and held England to a goalless draw while qualifying as winners of Group D, but the opportunity to surpass the tiny country’s heroes ofItalia 90, who made it to the second round, was a moment of history which for much of the game appeared to weigh heavily on the Costa Ricans. There was little freedom to their play, despite the best efforts of the creative Ruiz and energetic forward Joel Campbell. Greece were able to suffocate the game and turn it into a battle of attrition. As they proved when winning Euro 2004, Greece are the masters of shutting a game down and maximising any glint of a chance that comes their way. The Greek triumph 10 years ago in Portugal was achieved despite scoring just seven goals in six games, while none of their seven victories at major tournaments had been by more than one clear goal.Santos, the coach whose contract expires today, has bristled at suggestions his team are dull and destructive, but there has been little evidence that Greece have added a creative edge to their game that has been absent for over a decade. However, what they do, they do well and it would be unfair to dismiss the disciplined defensive qualities the Greeks possess. Their approach certainly stifled Los Ticos, with Christian Bolaños the only player to go close to testing Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis during a stultifying first half.It was Greece who carved out the better chances before the interval, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Georgios Karagounis going close from long range before Dimitrios Salpingidis was denied on 37 minutes when Navas produced a crucial save from the PAOK midfielder. The breakthrough that the game desperately needed came seven minutes into the second half, however, when Ruiz stroked the ball into the net from 20 yards.Clever build-up play by Campbell had released Bolaños down the left before the midfielder pulled the ball back for the Costa Rica captain. Ruiz appeared to have some work to do if he was to test the Greek goalkeeper, but after being left unmarked, he guided a left-foot shot into the far corner of the net, with Karnezis rooted to the spot as the ball trickled past him.The goal energised the Costa Ricans and they were unfortunate not to be handed the chance to double their lead within a minute when Dimitrios Salpingidis handled a cross in the penalty area.Australian referee Benjamin Williams missed the incident — a failure which appeared to unsettle the official, who proceeded to issue an array of cards in an attempt to reassert his authority. One of them, a second yellow awarded to Duarte for a foul on Jose Holebas, gave Greece renewed vigour, although it took another 24 minutes before Sokratis stunned the Central Americans by bundling in an equaliser to take the game into extra-time.Greece went closest to winning the game in the extra period, but Kostas Mitroglou spurned two clear chances. It came down to a test of nerve from 12 yards, though, and it was Los Ticos who came out on top.last_img read more
