first_imgPALMDALE — A stepped-up Antelope Valley crime-suppression effort has damaged the critical infrastructure of several prominent criminal street gangs, a sheriff’s official said. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Bobby Denham said an undisclosed number of gang members who serve in leadership capacities were arrested in the Antelope Valley Crime-Fighting Initiative. Denham, who has been assigned to coordinate the program, acknowledged targeting criminal street gang leaders to be a key component of the initiative. He said the arrests were a significant development in the Antelope Valley’s ongoing crime-fighting effort. “Organized criminal activity is directed through some of these individuals in leadership roles,” Denham said Wednesday. “By arresting these individuals, it makes an impact.” Denham would not identify the “decision-makers” or the gangs they represent, but he said the arrests involved gang members in leadership positions in both Lancaster and Palmdale. The crime-fighting initiative has produced more than 300 felony and misdemeanor arrests since it was launched March 20 on orders from Sheriff Lee Baca, Denham said. The program has resulted in the arrests of 24 known gang members. Sheriff’s deputies have also cited 27 known gang members and established contact with 91 others. Denham would not reveal a timetable for which specific locations will be targeted, but he said the suppression effort will include Lancaster and Palmdale, and surrounding unincorporated areas including Littlerock, Quartz Hill and Lake Los Angeles. — Gideon Rubin (661) [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
