first_img Reporters Without Borders joins its partner organization, Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS), in condemning an attack on Sivagnanam Selvatheepan, a journalist who freelances for Tamil media, near the northern city of Jaffna on the night of 14 April. Another Tamil journalist attacked in tightly-guarded Jaffna A 29-year old freelance Tamil journalist has been attacked by unknown men wearing helmets in the tightly guarded Northern Jaffna peninsula last evening (April 14).According to media sources, freelance journalist Sivagnanam Selvatheepan who has been contributing to a couple of Tamil national media outlets in Colombo was on his way home when he was attacked with iron rods by two unknown men on a motorbike near Puraporukki in Vadamaradchchi on the Sinhala Tamil New Year day night. “The attackers have followed him for a couple of miles before stopping him. They questioned him and ensured his identity before launching this cowardly attack,” a fellow journalist in Jaffna told the JDS via phone.Badly injured Selvatheepan has been admitted to the Jaffna base hospital and a complaint has also been lodged with the Kopay police. It is notable here that Selvatheepan along with his mother has appeared before the government’s Lesson Leant Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) to give on the disappearance of his brother, who had gone missing in Batticaloa. According to reports, he has informed his friends about unknown people following his movements and issuing threats. Sri Lanka’s Tamil Journalists’ Association has vehemently condemned the attack on Selvatheepan and urged the state authorities to launch an impartial investigation into the attack and end the prevailing culture of impunity on the attacks on journalists and media workers.”The attack on Selvatheepan has taken place amid mounting intimidations and harassment on journalists in the country as a whole and Jaffna in particular. Concrete actions should be taken to end the culture of impunity and to ensure a fear-free atmosphere for journalists to work independently,” Sri Lanka’s Tamil Journalists’ Association has said. first_imgIt’s undeniable that Denver has one of the most diverse and happening music scenes in the country right now. With musicians moving to the Rocky Mountain state as quickly as the rest of us, Denver and the surrounding areas have become a hotbed of musical activity. One of the hottest new(ish) venues to hit the scene is Knew Conscious Collective, which brings in jam, funk, livetronica, bass music, and house artists from around the globe. In the past, the venue has hosted shows with artists from acts like The Disco Biscuits, Break Science, Lettuce, SunSquabi, The String Cheese Incident, GRiZ, Shpongle, Thievery Corporation, The New Mastersounds, and many more.Knew Conscious Collective is an art gallery and social club that curates interesting late-night lineups week after week, making for a fully immersive visual and sonic experience that spans through to the early morning. The collective recently announced plans for their annual Alien Life Fashion Show, which will take place on Saturday, November 4th. The fashion show will be set to an original score by Soulacybin, plus the night will also see a performance from the full Orchard Lounge trio, marking their first appearance in Colorado in almost three years.Purchase Knew Conscious Membership and Alien Life Fashion Show event passes here.We caught up with Knew Conscious Collective founder, co-owner, and resident artist, Kurt Redeker, to discuss the Alien Life event, the collective’s recent move to a bigger space, and what Redeker and fellow co-owner Derrick Webb have in store for Knew Conscious Collective in the future. Check out the interview below.Live For Live Music: Knew Conscious just moved into a larger space? What’s the main goal behind the move?Kurt Redeker: The main goal behind the move was to create a bigger atmosphere for, most importantly, the art that we are trying to curate with our artists, as well as having a bigger space for our members to feel comfortable in during our shows.L4LM: What types of performances have already taken place? What artists can attendees expect to be seeing on a regular basis?KR: Some of the performances that have taken place have been GRiZ, Rob Garza, Gladkill, DJ Logic, Jason Hann, Adam Deitch, Marc Brownstein, Maddy O’Neal, jackLNDN, and Kaminanda to name a few. We expect to be working with most of these artist again in the near future. DJ Logic, Marc Brownstein, Eddie Roberts, Borahm Lee, & Jeff Franca[via CMeyerL4LM]L4LM: The walls of Knew Conscious are adorned with beautiful and unique artwork. Is this all done by you? What other artists are displayed?KR: The venue side of things here at Knew Conscious are all works done by me. They are the illuminating, geometric art. Some of the artists that have displayed are LOCASTRO, Demsky, CT Nelson, Morten Anderson, APEX Collective, Luke Brown, and Peeta.L4LM: Tell us a little about the concept behind the Alien Life Fashion show.KR: The Alien Life Fashion Show was conceptualized about six years ago. The reason behind this unique show was to bring as many artists together to work for one vision. I give each selected designer a piece of my art to be inspired by to create three to four couture designs, with models displaying the designs. And with the help of makeup artists and hair designers, I feel we achieve this one curated vision. It takes a lot of people to create this show, and we are super proud of it.[via Triage Creative]L4LM: This is Orchard Lounge’s first show in Denver as a full trio in quite awhile. Their return to the Rocky Mountains should coincide well with the fashion show celebration.KR: We are really stoked to be bringing Orchard Lounge to Denver. It’s been way too long.L4LM: What else do you have in-store for the future?KR: Some of the things that we have in store for the future are that we’re going to be raising the bar for bigger talent—both announced and unannounced names. Art installations, performance arts, and, of course, our fashion shows and block parties will also be part of next year!L4LM: Can you explain the membership fees associated with the gallery?KR: Knew Conscious Collective is “Membership Only” club that puts the social experience around the arts. The reason behind this is that we wanted to create something that was unique to the city of Denver—a safe place for our members—that does not compete with the other venues or events going on around town during the time that we are in operation as an after-hours club that goes until 5 a.m. sometimes. With your membership dues—that you pay either monthly or annually to the Collective—you are then required to pay an additional donation to come in to the space to view the art or listen to the music that is on hand at that given time with beverages included in the price to all those attending the club.L4LM: Thanks so much for your time, Kurt. Best of luck with the Alien Life event and new beginnings at the gallery!Membership and Fashion Show passes are currently on-sale and can be purchased here. first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Dr. Craig Spencer (Facebook)A Manhattan doctor who returned seven days ago from treating Ebola patients in West Africa tested positive for the virus Thursday, marking the first case of the deadly disease in New York.Dr. Craig Spencer, 33, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was taken directly to an isolation unit, after reporting symptoms of fatigue and a fever with a temperature of 103 degrees. New York City health officials said they quarantined his fiance, two friends and an Uber taxi cab driver who drove him home Wednesday from The Gutter, a bowling alley in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which has since closed as a precaution.“We were hoping that it didn’t happen, but we were realistic; this is New York,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters at a news conference Thursday night. “Our best information is that for the relevant period of time, he was only exposed to a very few people partially because he knew what the illness was all about and he was taking precautions.”The case is the fourth confirmed in the United States since a Liberian man became the first in Dallas before he died of Ebola on Oct. 8. He infected two nurses who treated him, one of whom has since recovered. The other, Nina Pham, is being treated in a special isolation unit at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.Those three prior cases come amid the largest Ebola outbreak in world history that has claimed nearly 5,000 lives in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, where Spencer had volunteered for the nonprofit Doctors Without Borders, which has been working to stem the crisis.Spencer was taken to Bellevue by specially trained first responders in Haz-Mat suits, like the thousands—including many on Long Island—that have been training for just such a case.Related: North Shore LIJ to Build Biocontainment Unit for Infectious DiseasesBesides the four Spencer contacts in quarantine, disease detectives are working to track down anyone else who may have come in contact with the doctor—a task that could prove difficult since he rode the A, 1 and L subway trains. But, health official cautioned that it is “extremely unlikely” that there is a risk of contracting Ebola from riding the same subway as Spencer because he was not sick enough to be contagious at the time he took the trains. The jetliner on which Spencer arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Oct. 17 was reportedly taken out of service for cleaning as a precaution. His apartment has been isolated as well.Although it claims the lives of half those who contract it, officials urged New Yorkers not to panic, reiterating repeatedly at the news conference that the only way to contract the virus is through direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected Ebola patient, not casual contact. Ebola is not airborne, officials repeated.“Being on the same subway car…does not in itself put someone at risk,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “There is no reason for New Yorkers to be alarmed. Ebola is an extremely hard disease to contract.” The case was confirmed just as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control announced it began 21-day monitoring of hundreds of daily air travelers who arrive in the nation from the four Ebola-stricken countries. Some are calling for anyone who arrives from those countries to be quarantined for that time. That rhetoric was particularly rampant, given the New York case was confirmed in the height of campaign season.“JFK must be shut now to passengers originating from Ebola designated nations,” said Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, the Republican gubernatorial challenger trying to unseat Cuomo, the Democratic incumbent. “This was avoidable.”The governor, who last week designated eight of the about 200 hospitals statewide as Ebola treatment centers, noted that three of the four Ebola patients in America so far have all been medical professionals who had been in direct contact with the disease.“I know it’s a frightening situation,” Cuomo said. “But, the more facts you know, the less frightening this situation is.”last_img read more

first_imgLocation and ATM availability is still perceived as the primary driver for potential members selecting or switching financial institutions. However, mobile and online banking offerings are increasingly more important, especially among millennials. For credit unions who have prioritized improving their mobile banking app, only to be left scratching their heads when download numbers and usage data don’t reflect expectations, here are some key reasons why there may be member hesitation to adopt the technology:Security Concerns: Mobile banking security has been consistently identified as the top barrier to adoption. General security concerns will keep a percentage of your members from moving to new technologies, and specific concerns such as rogue apps that have the potential to steal mobile banking login credentials will certainly deter some members from embracing your mobile app.  It is up to credit unions to sell their cybersecurity as a strength, because in reality, banking via a mobile app is as safe as walking into the credit union and interacting directly with a teller, and it is actually much more secure than banking through a browser on a personal computer. Why? Because mobile banking providers can control the security through the app much easier than through a browser.1 continue reading » 32SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more
